North west outstrips London for new indie retailers as sector enjoys strong growth

Small local businesses have benefitted from consumers turning their backs on big chains and multi-nationals, with independent retailers in the north west leading the charge.
The largest growth was in the north west, which recorded an 89% increase over the past five years, with 10,917 new independent retailers opening in 2014.
The report says the growth in independents is in part due to the public’s growing disinterest in chain stores, noting last year’s poor financial results from the UK’s leading supermarkets.
